Mini Lop v. Holland Lop...What's the difference?
Without a doubt, I will recieve countless emails this season (as with most of the year), if I have any Holland Lops available. If they really don't know, I get the mash up of a Mini Holland Lop. Unfortunately, this leaves me in the position that requires me to clarify with the potential owner, do you know what you are buying? ...are you talking about the Holland ( 2.5-4lbs on average, but those that do not inherit the dwarf gene can grow larger! Sometims as big as a Mini Lop!) or the Mini Lop (5-6.5lbs on average, but some oddballs out there can get up to 7lbs) Also, a dead giveaway is that both breeds share different body structures. The Holland Lop is posed upright, while the Mini Lop is low on the table, compact.
Which one is better? Well it depends.
In my experience, the smaller the body, the more fiesty/energetic the rabbit. The bigger, the more relaxed and cooled tempered. What this means, smaller may not be ideal for everyone, even though a lot of peole think they are super cute. So consider the breed you choose wisely. Do your homework and look for reputable breeders in your area! A good place to start is through the American Rabbit Breeders Association website.
When purchasing your pet rabbit, we highly recommend choosing a buck/male*. Often times, does start off sweet, but when breeding time comes around, can become moody/aggressive. Often times, the average pet owner is discouraged and end up getting rid of their rabbit. If you plan on purchasing a female, we recommend spaying her ASAP, but this doesn't* guarantee that she will not be/become moody. Again, this is why we recomend bucks! Fun fact: In the UK, the Holland Lop is called the Mini Lop! Often times, people are confused by conflicting websites from our friends from across the pond.
